How to find flatmates you can actually live with
Updated 20 September 2026
A flat is findable in a week. Three people who can live together is not, and almost every rental product in India is built for the first problem and silent on the second.
The three routes people actually use
- People you already know. Highest hit rate, smallest pool, and the reason most flat shares are formed by whoever happened to join the same company that month.
- City and university groups. Large pool, no structure. A post scrolls out of sight within the hour and there is no way to filter for the things that actually decide whether a share works.
- Joining an existing flat. Usually the fastest, because the household already works and you are the only variable.
What to agree before you sign anything
The arguments that end flat shares are almost never about rent. They are about the things nobody discussed because they felt too small to raise.
- Food. Veg-only kitchens are a rule, not a preference, and it has to be said out loud.
- Guests. How often, how long, and whether a partner staying four nights a week is a flatmate.
- Smoking and drinking, indoors and on the balcony, which are different questions.
- Cleaning. Whether there is a maid, what she does, and how her pay is split.
- Bills. Who pays, who chases, and what happens when somebody is late.
- Noise and hours. A flat of people on the same shift is a different place from one where somebody works nights.
What to check about the people
You are deciding whether to live with a stranger, which is a bigger decision than the rent. A real name, a real employer and a verifiable professional identity are the minimum. On FlatHunt a verified tick means the account signed in through LinkedIn, so it is LinkedIn confirming who somebody is rather than the app taking their word.
Meet in the flat before agreeing to anything. A video call is not a substitute: you learn more from the kitchen than from the conversation.
Find a room, or the person who takes yours
FlatHunt is built for exactly this handover, in Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Kolkata and Chandigarh.
